Hairpin -Tips and Tricks

If you google Hairpin lace, you will find all sorts of resources, Youtube, images, and tutorials.  Annie's offers a class, Learn to Crochet lace, Hairpin, Broomstick & Bruges with Ellen Gormley.   This is how I learned hairpin lace and I appreciate how Ellen demonstrates both right and left handed versions.
I am discovering, you can place your slip knot on either side of the loom and start your strip.
The tip to remember is your working yarn needs to lay over the top of the other side like this...
then it wraps around the back, insert your hook into your knot...
yo, and pull through a loop...

Then you are ready to start crocheting your strip.  The trick is to think of each loop as a stitch...
with a front loop and a back loop.  Most often you will work into the front loop.
Or you can even work a stitch around both loops like this...

Your stitches will look something like this...
ready for what comes next.

With a simple strip you can make a bookmark like this...

or a Headband like this...

WIP Wednesday -Hairpin Doily

In an effort to gain more skill in Hairpin lace, I went to Ravelry's pattern library.  Searching for Hairpin patterns, I picked some freebies to try out.  This is one of the patterns I tried....
A trio of Snowflake patterns, from Tuula Maaria.  A quick item to practice making hairpin circles.
Now, I am working on my third Hairpin doily,..
it has three rounds of lace strips and this is the last strip...
ready for joining.

Stay tuned I will share this finished doily tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Hairpin Fun

There is this book available at our library...
I like it so much I put it on my Amazon wish list (hint, hint).
Anyway it is full of how to and design ideas.  At a needle work fair, I picked up this loom kit...
for a $1.00.
In trying out some of the techniques in the book here is what I have so far...
I labeled all my braids so I could remember which is which...
to be continued...

Enjoy!

Bluebird

I worked on my embroidery last night finishing this bluebird...
It turned out beautifully.  This piece had several different stitches, stem, chain, blanket, french knots, detached chain stitch, star, and satin stitch.

Then I started a free form sampler...
incorporating some of my newly learned techniques.

Beaded Gerbera -tip for a seamless look

After finishing a big project like the Dogwood Scarf, I like to reward myself with quick small projects.  This week I made two brooches and this is one of them, a Gerbera Daisy Brooch. ...

It is a pattern from Lacy Crochet...
I decided to make it beaded, strung on my beads and set to work.
This is how my center looked after I finished it...
The arrow is pointing to my joins for each round in an effort to make it look seamless...
Yeah,  I could have crocheted it without a seam but I wanted to practice sewing beads on to try something new for me.

So I found a bead needle and sewed on beads to cover my joins...
and this was the result....
Then I blocked the petals...
 and finished it up.

Enjoy!

WIP -Wednesday

Right after school yesterday, Orla opened the embroidery kit and was ready to get started...
She picked this design as she loves hearts.  Then chose colors she has from other kits.
She got started saying, "I know how to do it, Mom"

So we both could do one at the same time, I picked this design..
Now if I can just put down my crochet hook?

Enjoy!

Embroidery

Yesterday, I received an email from Kelly Fletcher, as I am on her emailing list.  She is and embroidery artist and has lovely designs all of which you can find in her shop on etsy or on craftsy.  She also has a kit available at Barnes & Noble.

So last night I found myself buying this irresistible kit....

I have dabbled in embroidery a bit, teaching Orla and a few friends basic stitches.   I have tried other crafts knitting, spinning, and weaving but embroidery is the only one I have started and finished projects.  I think what draws me into embroidery most is the variety of colors and small projects.  I can start a design like the ones included in the kit and finish it in an evening.

So let me show you what is inside....
your fabric, thread, needles and stitch book....
then a hoop and iron-on transfers.

I wonder, what design shall I do first?

Enjoy!

Flower by flower...

Kevin's jeans were not quite long enough...
A beach towel was the perfect alternative. Using three different needles, sewing here and there...
I have a quarter finished and three quarters to go....

Ready for the layout...

All my bits and pieces are finished.   With a pair of Kevin's jeans...
I am ready to pin my pieces and layout out the flowers, leaves and filler motifs.  These are the only safety pins I can find.  I have not woven in all my ends yet I am going to use them to fasten it all together.  Then weave in my ends as I connect things together.

Enjoy!
