Winter Solstice

Once upon a time, a child was looking out the window watching the snow fall. He asked his mother, " What do snowflakes look like?" His mother smiled and simply said, "I wonder." In her mind she was thinking about some snowflakes she saw in a little shop on Etsy. Then she had the idea of how to create some magic for her son. That night while her son was in bed, she secretly ordered those snowflakes. Very soon they arrived in the mail. Each one was delicately unique just as in nature, a lacy crystal of beauty. She set them aside and that night after her son was in bed. She hung them from the very window through which her son was watching the snow fall. The next morning when her son looked out the window, he saw the snowflakes hanging. The look of wonder on his face was an image for her to treasure always!

Organize and Purge

Yes, it is organizing time again.... going through all the yarn... the endless process for a collector of yarn. How long should someone hold onto a skein of yarn? Impulse shopping, with the endless possibility of what can be made.... anyway it is time to put all the fibers together, and purge some of the manufactured fibers. So this is what my living room looks like now!

By the way, I just watched a wonderfully sad love story on instant Netflix, I was looking for a holiday movie but found Griffin and Phoenix, if you are in need of a good cry, check it out!

Enter the World of Wee Folk ...

Have you ever wondered... about the home of a gnome. Well this may be the story of one gnome and his home.

Once upon a time in a grassy green meadow with a river that rounds, there in the middle stands the home of a gnome. The home of a gnome has a grassy floor in the hollow of a tree. There near the door is a little window, so a visitor may sneak a peek. He has a window and a door to keep out the cold of winter and the let in the cool midsummer nights breezes to tickle his nose as he sleeps. He has a round little bed to rest his head. A mushroom table that is more than it seems, it holds the sticks. Well the sticks are the gnome’s and with these sticks he plays. On chilly afternoon days he may pile them high as for a fire to feel cozy warm inside. During summer days and night, he may place them this way and that in the shape of a room to sleep under the star filled sky. Then he may set them out to run races in a path, that walking feet may pass. His home is surrounded by trees and pine cones to climb. He has a copper leaf boat to sail the river round. He shares his home with his hedgehog friend. They play all day and into the night for that is the way gnomes spend their days. It is just what they do best.

Fall into Winter

I always have a stack of patterns I would like to try, and last weekend I did just that...

This is a free pattern from Lion Brand, it is the Love Birds pattern and it is very quick and easy! I made another pair and we gave them as a birthday present. These are Orla's and yes it is all about pink for my girl. This week on our morning walk one day, Orla and I collected some leaves so I could add some fall to my classroom at our preschool.

Then I was thinking of an idea for my shop, here is a hint....

It seems when people think of winter all they can think about is the COLD. When within winter there is so much beauty, in the dormant trees, the frosty green lawns, and the snow, how it glistens from the trees. I so enjoy looking out the window during a snow and having the feeling I am in my own snow globe. We don't get much of this in sunny, barely cold, Atlanta, but we are lucky enough to experience snow at least once every winter. So with these snowflakes I would like to create some magic.

Summer Jewelry

Over time you collect things for me it is yarn, beads, thread, and hooks all of which I have in great supply. Well, at Stitches South this year, I bought a spool of nylon thread, and silk thread in 2 colors.

I had these natural aquamarine squares from a previous purchase

and paired with a pale aqua silk thread. I made this one for myself, since my birthday in March.

Dyed Pearls with blues silk thread.

This idea came from a necklace I saw at Anthropologie. This is one super long strand that wraps as many times as 4 as in the picture. This is made with a denim color nylon. Even with all these beads, the necklace has weight but it is not heavy.

Pairing these beads together, I always thought I would use a blue thread but a red nylon thread won. I have had these beads and the red nylon for some and finally over the summer I put them together. I try to find a balance between form and freedom. The number of each bead, with the number of stitches in between the beads, creating some spaces more random than others.

This is a pale aqua thread with Size 8 japanese seeds beads, in a frosted iridescent steel gray. Beads and bobbles create the necklace and earrings while straight beaded lines make the button band.

Peacock color thread and random blue, green, and turquoise beads create this five strand freeform necklace, bracelet and earrings.

I am continuing to work on beaded button bands, and I have some more beads strung for new creations to be worked up soon. Enjoy!

To Blog or Not to Blog

Hello All.
I have been asking myself for the last few months, do I make time for blogging or just let it go?

I like to sharing with all of you, and it fun keeping up with everyone else too. The issue is making the time... which is possible. My daughter is in a pre-k class at our preschool, and she is in school on Fridays. So for the first time in 4 years, I have 4 hours to myself every Friday, I don't care to spend it all cleaning, it should be time for creating, maintaining my shop, and blogging. Here I am picking up where I left off with pictures of the sweater I made this last spring.

I have spent the summer making dishcloths for our house, and hot pads too. I have not found any that I like at any store I been to visit. I have made some shawls, and thingymabobs.
And jewelry, I will share that next time.

Recently, I had an order for some ponytails and clips and just sold these large ponytails, as well to the same customer. The request came on Valentine's Day, I made them Monday night and took pictures yesterday afternoon, listed them last night after crochet meet up. Then mailed them this morning, quite a turn around.

I am now working on this cardigan from the latest issue of Interweave Crochet. I was at Michael's and spotted some clearance Bernat Softee Baby, in an Aqua color. I hope to finish it over next weekend.

Hello Everyone, I missed all the holidays time travels so fast sometimes. We just had an unexpected vacation at home, I still had to work... but for a whole week we had the week off of school. The state of Georgia only has 12 snow plows. It started snowing at this time last Sunday and turned everything a snowy delightful white. Then the following days it was so cold and icy. Anyway hope all is well with all of you.

This is a dodecahedron which is a polyhedron with 12 points. What is a hedron? it is a geometric figure having a certain number of surfaces.

As I was looking for pattern on Ravelry, I first found a Berroco pattern for this, and thank goodness I found Amy Thornton's pattern. Thank you so much Amy! I have made 3. On the first 2 I would get to the end and somewhere along the way I did not assemble something right and I would take it all apart and assemble from start to finish without trouble.

With my 3rd one I could assemble it as I went along, the difficult part is stuffing it, and with the 12th point I slip stitched 2 sides from the outside and it looks fine. They are fairly quick to make, took apart a cowl and a shawl I made with sock yarn just so I could make more. I also bought some clearance sock yarn, so I can make lots of them. If you try one leave all your tails long for stitching your seams tight when it is finished. Enjoy!

New Crochet

Here is the Lion Brand Shell I made with 3 skeins of Microspun, I did not make it long enough, so I added more at the bottom.

This is the mohair cowl, I think I will list this in my store.

This is a cowl I created from the remaining sport weight yarn I had left from the Pearl's Cardigan. I am going to list this in my store too, I just need some more pictures. I am trying to use up some yarn before we go home to Wisconsin at Christmas, and I take my yearly trip to Herrshners. I am on a roll, I just have to stay away from Hobby Lobby. Next I will show you my thingymabobs.

Over the Weekend

I have finished two Cowls, one lacy, and one more geometric and a mohair scarf. Tonight I am starting a Shell sweater with Microspun. I have had 3 skeins of Lion Brand Microspun for 7 years and I hope by next weekend to show you a finished item. Stay tuned....

Heat Exhaustion

Toward the end of summer, heat exhaustion sets in... as it seems summer is never going to leave. By Labor day everyone goes back to school if they have not been in school for almost a month, and our weather just keeps getting hotter, and stickier. Here in Georgia, we have the longest summer and a long fall, the briefest of winters and a spring that starts in February and ends in April. We have been living down here for 6 years, I can't seem to adjust. It will end hopefully in a week and I hope to wear jeans in October. Anyway, after my last post, I started training for our preschool which was a flurry of activity and then school started and the flurry continues, but it has been so much fun. I have made 2 picnics of crochet food for my preschool, which took a while. Then I couldn't wait to get back to my thread, and I made a bunch of ponytails...

then Orla wanted a backpack lunch box....

then someone asked me about slippers, so I made Orla a pair of slipper and will be making more.

Then I was on the Lion brand website found the new crochet along, Pearl's Cardigan, which crocheted up quite fast

and was an easy pattern, I used some Lion brand Woolease Sportweight I had, I started it last Friday night and by Tues. I wove in my ends and I was done. Looking forward to cooler days and more blogging. Enjoy!

New Bracelet

Button Band

Last summer, I met a woman, she makes yummy jams, and she enjoyed my flowers. She didn't want them for her hair, she wanted to wear them as a bracelet. So I thought about it, and made this....

a button band, I created it after seeing a similar bracelet on Ravelry. I made one for myself and I enjoy wearing it, very sleek and stylish. The width is perfect for adding on of my flower accessories. I can add a flower and wear a corsage whenever. I bought all these plastic rings for some reason, sometimes I use them to make earrings, and now I can use them to make button bands as well.

Michigan

We had so much fun on our trip to Michigan. with Kevin's family. When we all get together there are 20 of us, and we all stayed in one big house on a lake. The weather was perfectly cool, and the sun did not set until 10:30, which Orla adapted to quite well. She loved playing in the water, it did not matter if she had a suit, clothes or no clothes. Simply wonderful.

Yoli Necklace and Earrings

This is the old picture that will be replaced in my store tomorrow.

I have found the perfect place to take pictures. While I am at the pool with the kids, the lifeguards take a 15 minute break every hour. So the kids go to the baby pool. Though the concrete is hot is serves as a superb background for pictures.

My pictures are just better, I can find shade or sun, and it is open until October. What I will do in the winter months, I am unsure. I decided to call these Yoli necklaces in memory of my friend Yolanda Hernandez.

Swap Project

This is the other project that I am slowly working with the Size 20 thread I received in a swap.
I strung 3 little packages of beads on and mixing them in randomly. I am unsure if this will be a scarf or a cowl possibly only time will tell.

Crochet Hair Clip Accessories

This is a sampling of all the different, flowers and hair clips I create. I make small, medium, and large snap clips, and french clips, as well as alligator clips. The flowers are available in a range of sizes too. I also make butterflies, ladybugs, and lacy circles. These accessories are all interchangeable. They can be added to any of the clips I make as well as headbands, bobby pins, or any kind of clip.

I enjoy watching my daughter pick out a flower and slip it on a headband. She is 3 and at 2 years old she could slide the flowers onto her headbands and clips.

Add a safety pin and you have a brooch, or slip through a piece of ribbon, or chain for a necklace. If you have a small dog or cat, add a flower to their collar.

Sea Shells and Thread

These are all the sea shells we found at the beach or in the sea, like the big one. The beauty of the gulf is the crystal clear water, so I stepped on the big shell, we made sure it was empty and picked it up. The sand dollar washed up on shore, as did the lettered olives, and the other small spiral shells.

Now for the thread, do I need more thread, no, but I love the colors, all colors. When this package came yesterday from Paraguay, I was a kid in a candy store. Orla helped me remove the packaging and then had fun selling them to me.

Navarre Beach, FL

This last weekend we set out for the gulf coast for some fun in the sun. We left late Thursday afternoon, I had gotten an oil change at Walmart. I noticed oil leaking from the car, and Kev thought they just spilt a whole mess of oil, so we left. We made to Opelika, AL and had no oil in the car, we put some oil in and made it to the nearest Walmart, and had our car fixed. I am grateful to the number of Walmarts out there, but I will no longer get any car services at Walmart. We made to the beach and had so much fun.

We went back to the beach in the evening for shell hunting.

Schools of Manta Rays were swimming around and I touched one, there were so many.

Orla absolutely loved the water, and the beach, she says the water tastes spicy.

She spent most of her time on the beach being a hatching sea turtle.

We did find some good shells, I post those next. Enjoy!

The Pullover

Today we went Strawberry picking. We went to the same farm as last year, but this time we did not pick as many as last year. They are so so delicious. We will have to try to go for raspberries, the trick is you have to get there right a 9:00 by 10:30 you may be too late.

Tonight for dinner I made spinach salad, with a bit of red onion, sunflower seeds, olive oil with with cilantro herb blend, and some of our fresh picked strawberries.

The main course was stuffed shells, I added white cheddar instead of mozzarella, and diced up some deli chicken and added it to the cheesy mix. Yum, yum.

Now for an update on my pullover, I have one square...

now two squares, lightly blocked and ready to be crocheted together.

Rosemary Popcorn

This is our favorite snack, Orla loves it. You pop the popcorn on the stove with oil we use canola, you add sprigs of rosemary, and popcorn. The rosemary pops of the sprigs as the popcorn pops.

I started putting some of my clips together to make sets. The medium clips sets have 3 different clips with 2 interchangeable flowers, and a set of ponytail holders.

The small clips sets have 2 pairs of clips with a set of flowers and small ponytail holders. The small ponytail holders are perfect for little ponytails or braids.

They make a perfect birthday gift or anytime surprise. These sets are available in my shop, along with a few others, and I can custom create sets as well. Enjoy!

Sugar Stars

accidently made one with just 5 loops, which creates a star.

Then, Kevin said they looked like sugar crystals, hence the name, Sugar Stars.

Cotton Puff Free Pattern

I try very hard live green, we use biodegradable trash bags, we use cloth napkins and do not buy paper towels. We use compact florescent light bulbs and recycle all we can. About a month ago, my bag of cotton balls was nearing its end, and I wanted to create something, I could use like a cotton ball and not buy anymore. So I created this cotton puff, it is made with cotton yarn, fits on my finger and I can wash it in the washing machine. I think it works better than a cotton ball, it is much more cheery than a plain white cotton ball and for me it exfoliates too.

It is a quick pattern, easy practice increasing and decreasing. This is worked in rounds with no joining.

Peaches n' Cream, Cotton yarn, Fiesta is the color in my picture.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. 12 sc.

Rnd 5: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 6: Dec over 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, rep to 18 sc.

Weave in your ends.

If you have trouble getting a tight stitch, try a smaller hook.

After a recent rainy day at sunset I caught this double rainbow.

This used to be my color palette with a separate one for my multi color threads, and one for all the clips, and ponytail holders. Now I have this....

It is two individual boxes that connect together.

In this picture, a friend gave me a bead mat it keeps the beads from moving.
I love fishing tackle boxes, they are not just for fishing.

Phone Mishap

This is my new phone it is a Samsung Reclaim, and it was free. My is green and Kevin's is grey. It is made with 80% recyclable materials. It has a camera and keyboard. I like it. I have had it for about 2 weeks and I keep it in my back pocket. Last Wednesday at school I was using the bathroom and when I sat on the seat, into the toilet went my phone. Right away I took it apart and dried off all the parts, took out the battery. I tried charging it, nothing seemed to happen. I was so upset, my new phone broken. When Kevin came home he said google Phone in toilet so I did, and hair dried my phone for about 15 minutes and it was fine.

My sister Alisha lives in Madrid, and I asked her to send me some yarn from Spain, well she hasn't found any so far. Then last Thanksgiving she was in Vietnam for a music festival with her rock band and found these goodies.

A while ago, I bought some fabric to make Orla a duvet and pillow cover. I also found this remnant and instead of letting it sit in my fabric box for eternity, I made Orla this skirt.

Her reply was "You made this for me" and the jeans her Opa bought her for christmas have become "Opa made these for me." The skirt is long enough and may fit her for a few more Valentine Days.

My sewing skills will most likely remain at entry level, I have made a few things and worn skirts that I have made, and people who actually can sew can identify my handiwork. I did also make these snack sacks. The inside lining is nylon, they are washable and reusable.

Fabulous Yarns

A few months ago, a friend of mine introduced me to Judy of Mama Jude's. She gave me the idea for the butterfly shawl. She plant dyes organic yarn as well as spins and dyes fibers into yarn. I made this scarf from her bulky Merino, and it is so soft, and so colorful.

This one is a wool mohair blend, I got this color and some red that was dyed with Brazilian wood fibers, I made a scarf for my sister, since she plays viola and her bow is made from Brazilian wood.

This one is her sock yarn, I don't make socks, this will be a shawl.

This is silk and wool and it is so so soft. I bought all the yarns as hanks and I was able to wind them all easily not one of the 5 hanks knotted. Judy's prices average between $18 and $38.00 well worth a luxurious treat.

Birthdays and Butterflies

Today, Orla turned 3 years old, and she is wonderful. She is such a joy even when she is being as naughty as she can be. Kevin turned 40 ten days ago, and he stressed about it a year ago, now he is fine with it.

I hope everyone had a very joyous holiday season. I guess I went on vacation from blogging early December. We took our long epic journey to the South Suburban Chicago, and then further up north into Wisconsin, to see family and we had a great time. Orla didn't sleep much in the car but our dog did. When we returned to chilly cold Atlanta after the New Year, our car looked as though we took a trip to the moon, as people looked at our car we laughed.

Anyway, last fall I met someone who spins and plant dyes some gorgeous yarns, which I hope to share next time. She gave me this idea of making a butterfly shawl for Orla, I made one, and then I had to make another. Orla and Kate enjoy being butterflies as much as they enjoy seeing the real one in action.

Felted Flower Bouquet

Well I forgot to take a pictures of our students project before I took it to school and this is the picture I received from the winner. Each student picked a flower, and put it in a bag with dish soap to start felting, I took them home felted them and brought them back to school. Then everyone picked out a button, and a thread color and sewed the button and the other embellishments, and intro to embroidery for 3 year olds. This went for $120.00 and the picnic basket went for $75.00.

Our Preschool is having a silent auction tonight. All the teachers had to make an item for the auction, and one of the other teachers suggested I make a picnic for 4. So this is it. I would estimate my time at about 30 hours and I retail valued it at $125.00. I didn't have to buy any yarn it is all stash yarn. I used patterns from the Tasty Crochet book, and made them a smaller size to accommodate toddler hands. The basket was 50 cents and the fabric $4.

Anyway I will let you know how much a picnic for 4 is worth.

This is the Preppy Tank from Crochet Today Sep./Oct 2007. I made this tank in October in one weekend while recovering from the flu. I made it with Caron Simply Soft, in the Lavender Blue color. I needed something to wear with a sheer yellow button shirt I bought from Old Navy. Eventually I want to make another one with Cotton Ease.

At the last Farmer's Market I sold the Turquoise hat and Scarf from my last post. I am currently working on some scarves, trying to destash a bit. Oh and I have make some butterfly capes for Orla and Kate. Happy Holidays!

So after I discovered the bunny tutorial, I tried to create a bird, which didn't turn out so well. Two weeks ago I was a crochet group at Barnes & Noble, looking at the new book Crochet Adorned, and I now have a bird. I added my loop to the back for barrettes, then changed the size to a smaller one.

Last week Orla and I had the flu, and missed a few days last week. We are both feeling better, we are not flu shot people so we take our chances. I did manage to crochet a Preppy Tank from Crochet Today, Sep./Oct. '07. I will take pictures soon.

I made some hats recently the multi colored hat is from Crochet Today, it is too floppy for me.

I wrote a pattern for this next hat, usually I make it with a textured yarn, but this time I thought I would just try stripes.

This hat is also my own design, I made another one right away but I haven't written it, yet. I think I need to add a flower.

This hat and fingerless gloves are patterns from Chicks with Sticks. They are both very quick and easy to make.

I made this make-up bag and tweezer case, several years ago with nylon.

I made this hat last fall for a woman, then she wanted different colors, which I then made for her.

Tattoos and Toes

So how far can a crochet obsession go? Well you can get ink. I got my tattoo 7 years ago, before we left Oshkosh, part crochet trade and part cash.

I like frogs and I love crochet!

Now for the toes, I should have taken a picture right after my neighbor painted Orla's toes for the first time, but we have been busy. I try to buy all natural products if I can and so I found some natural low odor nail polish, it is formaldehyde free. The polish is Go Natural. We have 4 colors and polish remover. So pedicures have become a weekly thing.

I have lots of crochet to share, I just have to take pictures.

Eco Friendly Picnic at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens

A couple of weeks or maybe a month ago, the girls and I went to the botanical gardens. We packed a lunch, in all re-usable containers, and brought our own napkins. We had a brilliant time, doing summersaults in the rose garden in the rain. We also saw the Thomas Moore sculptures which are amazing and wonderful. The botanical gardens is one of my favorite places. I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Circles

15 pairs of circles with tails for sewing, $35.00, mailing to Los Altos tomorrow. This was fun, I did not repeat a color, and now have all sorts of color ideas for ponytails.

Orla and I had a great first day of school. In my class we only had one boy cry, and in Orla's class she helped pass out tissues for all her friends missing their mommies. We made applesauce and during free play I crocheted 2 strips of bacon. Tomorrow Orla's class makes applesauce, we make it in rice cookers and my class will make bread.

I cleaned out my closet and organized my crochet office, trying to develop a rhythm to fit in more time for crochet as well as blogging and such.

I will have have to show you the bacon, eggs, bread, and pickles. Stay tuned.

Tomatoes

I traded some clips for a tomato plant, and I put the tomato stand over it. We we came back from our midwest trip, it tipped over my stand is not tall enough. A friend told me that I could pick the tomatoes and they would ripen in the sun. Plan B is trying to let them ripen inside versus outside. I just keep propping it back up when it tips over, hoping for some tomatoes. We will just have to see.

This is the friend we found on the tomatoes. We poked and touched him so much that he moved on to a more peaceful spot.

These are the little friends that are having fun munching on my tomatoes, but not all of them.

Someone told me if I picked my tomatoes and set them in the sun, they would ripen. Well they turn red and rot on my table so we have moved to Plan B.

These are my Morning Glories, they have taken over our lattice fence. I just love the intensity of their color.

Real Quick

I have started another job at The Children's Garden Preschool. I am a mom, nanny, and now assistant preschool teacher in training so I am making adjustments to my schedule, developing a rhythm to fit everything in. I have already folded and put away clothes from the weekend laundry, written a rough draft of a welcome letter, and now for some crochet.

So stay tuned I have tomato pictures to share, and a recent trip to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens seeing the Henry Moore sculptures as well as beautiful flowers.

Roadside Flowers

Do you ever notice the roadside flowers while driving down the highway? I always enjoy seeing flowers and these blue flowers in particular are my favorite. There is just something about them, soft and airy. I spotted them while we were in Illinois at a gas station.

I am a complete no High Fructose Corn Syrup or Partially Hydrogenated Oil person except when eating out because you just don't know. Herrschners

Free trinkets for Orla, she is really cute.

I have said I don't need anymore yarn, and I have shown you all I don't need anymore yarn. But, and there is always that but, every time I go home, I seem to find myself going to Herrschners. You all probably get the catalogs but they have a retail store as well. When I was in there around Christmas, someone drove all the way from Arkansas to shop at the retail shop, to find colors for this cross-stitch crochet afghan, she ended up buying embroidery thread to get the colors she needed. I did not get to see the afghan but the employees were talking about it.

So on our recent trip, Orla and I had to see if they had bamboo yarn for Alessandra's yarn swap and they did in the bargain section. Of course, they also had a bunch of other yarns too.

Orla was really into shopping and had picked much more than I bought.

$.99 yarns to make scarves?

These are definitely a hat and scarf set.

Market bags, I think this thread has been discontinued essentially it is two size 10 threads held together. I wish, I could make these bags faster, then I would sell them.

And yet more thread for flowers, barrettes, and clips.

Yarn Swap and Crochet Office

Ruth was my yarn swap pattern and sent me this wonderful box with a hand crafted note, Bamboo yarn and a whole bag of chocolates, which I shared with friends when they came over to knit and crochet last week.

She also sent this beautiful bag, which I will use greatly since I bring bags to bag my groceries, especially Target trips, they still do not have recyclable bags. Thank you so much Ruth, I mailed a little something to her today, I hope she enjoys.

I know at one time, I may have mentioned my crochet office is my sofa. Recently, I rescued this unused laundry cart from the closet, now it is my crochet office on wheels.

Midwest Odyssey Part 2

First, I would like to say Happy Birthday Alesandra! I hope you have a wonderful birthday!

So after we left Illinois, we headed up to Wisconsin which is where I am from and where much of my family lives. First we stopped by my dad's and then we went to my brothers. We also had pizza from our favorite pizza place in Wausau, Sam's pizza, it is thin, greasy but crispy and very delicious.

We did go out on the boat and my dad pulled my niece and nephews in the tube. The weather was intermittently cloudy and cool and we rode in the boat but the water was so so cold, and then we had to leave because it started raining.

Market Bag

Does anyone remember seeing this yarn or thread?

Speed Cro-Sheen was only available in a few colors, and I had 5 balls of navy and made this market bag. This pattern was in the latest issue of Knit Simple. It has a pocket to fold the bag into, and since it is a bag I didn't bother with the gauge. I think I have enough navy left over to make a hat.

I made the navy bag weeks ago and finished a smaller bag with this thread on the way to Illinois. This thread and color is still available, though I have had the thread for 6 years.

Midwest Odyssey Part 1

My friend Gloria is having a giveaway for her 100th blog post. I wonder how long it will take me to get to 100 blog posts, I better get busy. We returned late Tuesday from our midwest odyssey. We have two super duper travelers, Orla and Elvie both of whom needed equal number of pee stops, the pink potty travels well. I am downloading pictures as I write. Our first stop was Tinley Park to Grandma, PopPop and Aunt Kathy's house.

I have been very busy with work and trying to potty train Orla, that I haven't been able to keep up this my posts. A few posts ago, I asked for guesses as to new products to my store and CT was correct in saying iPhone, and iPod cozy. They are still a work in progress as I do not own a iPhone or an iPod and I am relying on friends to share.

The other items were earrings and cuffs, that I made before but I now stiffen the earrings and added a button to the cuff instead of snaps.

Which I have an idea and will share with you upon my return. Tomorrow we are leaving for a 10-12 day trip to see family, first to Illinois and then to Wisconsin, we are driving so I will have plenty of crochet time. Also, I am taking my camera so I can take pictures right away and work on revamping my etsy store when I get back.

I am so glad you enjoyed my pictures especially the horseshoe crab, I recently watched an episode of Nature on PBS, about the Horseshoe crab and the Red Knot birds, very interesting.

I will be back in time to mail out the yarn swap and chocolate bar.

So I have been busy, recently we took a long weekend trip to Hilton Head, SC and Orla for her 1st trip to the ocean. She had the most fun, loved swimming in the ocean with her dad...

Then on the way home we stopped at Pickney Island and walked 1.2 miles on a 100 degree day to take pictures of birds with our new camera...

Orla's Lunch Box

This fall I will have a 2nd job as an assistant teacher, at the Children's Garden Preschool, down the street from our house. This coming week I will be working a week of summer camp and Orla will be going too. So she needed a lunch box, and I wanted her to have a washable lunch box, that wasn't necessarily plastic, and didn't cost much money.

So I decided to use some of my yarn stash to make her one... with Sugar n' Cream Cotton yarn in Violet Veil...

I started it and got fairly far before I didn't like it and took it all apart....

I made bottom with an F hook and had to switch to a D hook on the sides. I made it big enough to fit her Foogo cup, and her lunch items. I also recently found Green Street Bags and bought these reusable, washable, sandwich and snack bags

So, the second try turned out perfect, all I have to do is add a snap.

Orla's Super Cute Bikini

Last summer, on our way to Michigan, I decided to make a clip cover, and I started with the alligator and smallest clips. I created the pattern, made a few for Kevin's nieces and Orla just starting wearing barrettes.

Then when we got back I went back to Hobby Lobby, and bought the other sizes, and develop patterns for the medium and large clips.

Chicken Salad

This is a picture of my chicken salad. It is yummy. I got the idea from watching tv commercials with Savion Glover dancing and making chicken salad. My chicken salad is made from chicken breasts or leftover rotisserie chicken, mayonnaise, celery, chopped cashews, and shallots, as well as salt and pepper. The shallots give it such flavor. Kevin and I enjoy it sooo much. We will eat it with pita chips or as sandwiches.

Toys Part 2

I have been making some more bears and thought I would share some advice. Most instructions seem to suggest, making the head, then the body, and then the limbs, eyes and ears. When trying to sew on all the parts, I always have to take the head and body apart. I suggest making all the limbs eyes and ears first, then the head and body. This way you can sew them on as you are crocheting the head or body.

Lionbrand also has a bunch of free amigurumi patterns. I think I would like to try this one...

Toys

I have been working on making some more toys, some amigurumi bears, and blobs. For the bears, I am using a pattern from Mr. Funky's, Super Crochet Wonderful. I am not using any beads for eyes or noses, just all crochet. They are fun to make and all the different parts don't take very long. The time consuming part is the assembly and trying to sew and stuff the parts, everything but the eyes and ears are stuffed.

The blobs are my own design. I have made them out of cotton, and inside they have small bells and a squeaker. I think of them as a good toy for babies to gnaw and chew, and they can be thrown in the washer, but would air dry best.

Atlanta Jazz Festival

For Memorial Day Weekend, Grant Park hosted the Atlanta Jazz Festival and all we had to do to go was walk down the street.

We had a great time. It rained, and stormed some but fans were undeterred.

I myself am used to and favor classic jazz, Charles Mingus, Thelonias Monk, Miles Davis, ....this jazz was more smooth jazz but still quite entertaining.

Publix one of the sponsors, was giving out hula hoops, which was quite cool. Orla got hers on Saturday and I got one on Sunday. They gave out 2 sizes and a kids hula hoop is just for a kid.

She had a wonderful time and really enjoyed dancing to the music, I hope our park will host again next year.

Rice Cooker

When we left Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 2002, we left these great neighbors who gave us this rice cooker. We took it to Oxford, Ohio for two years, and I am not sure it left the packing box, then we brought to Atlanta. We unpacked it and set it up above our cabinets, in the kitchen. Recently, I was organizing and took this wonderful unused rice cooker, that we have had a traveled with through 2 states, and finally made some rice. We received it without instructions, and what is difficult about making rice, nothing! I have mad rice twice, it even has a steamer for vegetables. I am thankful I didn't give it to Goodwill.

Flower Necklaces

I have some new necklaces in my etsy store. I created these necklaces for children but they size from 15-17.5" so most anyone could wear one. I am wearing one as I write this post.

As you can see they are cute and colorful, and a perfect accessory for summer.

I created these after a friend told me about some crochet necklaces at Hanna Anderson. I checked them out online, and then went to the store to check them out in person.

I have created mine a bit differently, they close with a button and mine are much more sturdy.

Rugs

When we bought our condo, I made rugs for our bathroom and kitchen. I made all of them with Red Heart Supersaver and a P hook.

The bathroom rugs are made with windsor blue, lilac, and blueberry pie. The smaller rug is 24" and the larger rug is 35".

The kitchen rugs are made with soft navy and viva, discontinued print. Red Heart always seems to discontinue my favorite multis, which is a shame the colors are so wonderful. The large kitchen rug is about 54".

The smaller rug is 33".

Everyday Should be Mother's Day

My new mug from my husband. He asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day and I told him. So he went to Crate & Barrel and bought us these bowls at my request. There are 4 bowls not just 3 as the picture shows. I love these bowls, they are perfect for everything, and will not break down or melt like plastic can. I will be making lots of salads and marinating yummy meats. So everyday should be Mother's Day!

This is the necklace I made for the ThreadArtists artistic challenge.

This necklace is colorful and can be worn either long or short. I have connected 2 lobster clasps to fold the necklace in half making a double strand of flowers.

2 Balls of Peaches and Cream

Recently, I was shopping at Walmart and I bought 2 balls of Peaches n' Cream, the color is Gumdrops. I made Orla a summer hat, which she likes very much even though she is not smiling. She is very busy!

For my birthday, my employer, gave me flowers and a gift card. After the flowers finished blooming, I covered this vase with the rest of the yarn and returned it to her.

I still have one vase to cover. Stay tuned.
